Kategori hukum dapat dilihat berdasarkan sifatnya, yaitu hukum publik yang mengatur hubungan antara negara dan warga negara (misalnya hukum pidana dan hukum tata negara), serta hukum privat yang mengatur hubungan antarindividu (misalnya hukum perdata dan hukum dagang). Selain itu, pembidangan hukum juga mencakup hukum nasional, internasional, substantif, dan prosedural, yang memperlihatkan aspek-aspek hukum sesuai dengan kebutuhan yurisdiksi tertentu.
